A Miracle in Dragon Form free essay sample

In the Scottish highlands, a young wizard plays the bagpipes for his deceased grandfather, a gentle elderly man brutally slain by the Dark Knight. Without warning, a stuntman in a rubbery dragon costume leaps out from behind a rock, his costume’s head cleverly attached to the neck by a plaid scarf. A bemused child welfare worker and an angry tax collector sprint into the scene from the other direction, their blazers askew and hair disheveled. This scene is not the muddled results of pot brownies or a slow descent into insanity. It is the climactic scene from a little-known cinematic mas-terpiece titled Dragonworld II: The Legend Continues. This movie, which chronicles a young Scot-tish boy and his pet dragon, Yowler, has evolved far past a form of entertainment for my friends and me. It has become tradition. Tradition, as I have learned over the years, is much more than a classic Fiddler on the Roof song. We will write a custom essay sample on A Miracle in Dragon Form or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Although they may seem silly or pointless, traditions help maintain a sense of routine in peo-ple’s hectic and convoluted lives. Although their purpose is to create stability, traditions often spring from unstable or unprecedented scenarios. Thanksgiving began in a time of famine and hardship. The Fourth of July began with the creation of a new country. Dragonworld proved no different. My in-fatuation with the movie began shortly after freshman year when Gavin, my best friend, developed Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of cancer. In most situations, a Hodgkin’s patient is more likely to be killed in a car crash driving back from the hospital than from the disease itself. The factoid, while reassuring, did not assuage the fears of myself or many of my friends. To support Gavin, or perhaps to pacify our own nightmares, my friends and I spent the better part of our summer in Gavin’s basement doing nothing in particular. We played video games, we watched movies, an d we ate the brownies and lasagna that concerned parents had baked for Gavin’s family. We quickly ran through our favorite movies- 300, Pan’s Labyrinth, and The Godfather to name a few- and began hunting for less conventional films. This search initially only resulted in a handful of rejects (Ong-Bak: Thai Warrior, anyone?) but eventually led us to Dragonworld, the Holy Grail of preposterously dreadful films. Dragonworld had appallingly bad dialog, exaggerated Scottish accents, bagpipe playing, and a dragon played by a man in a sub-par theme-park costume. An unintentional self-parody, the film excelled by failing so miserably, so totally, that it succeeded beyond our wildest expectations. The Godfather may be the best movie ever made, but Dragonworld had the unique ability to transport us from a world of cancer and hospitals and into a world of dragons and low-budget special effects. It was exactly what we needed, and exactly what we would continue to need in the upco ming months of high school and chemotherapy. Put simply, it was a miracle in dragon form. When my friends and I finished Dragonworld for the first time, sprawled on ancient couches in Gavin’s dingy basement, we considered rewinding it and immediately watching it again. We ulti-mately decided against it, hoping to save the film’s magical qualities for later gatherings. We could not keep ourselves away for long, however, and found ourselves back in Gavin’s basement less than a month later, laughing at Yowler’s antics until our stomachs ached. Thus began the unofficial tradition of Dragonworld screenings. What began in that basement mere weeks after the cancer was diagnosed has continued past Gavin’s battle and triumph over cancer and into our junior year of high school. Although no one keeps track, we try to watch the movie at least one a month, setting aside homework and band practice to do so. We claim that the film is our sole motivation, but we h ave all memorized the dialog by now; what’s really important is not the people on the screen, but the people on the couches watching it. High school has produced hardship and struggle for all of my friends, but watch-ing Dragonworld lets us forget those troubles and focus instead on a story of love, bravery and friendship. This monthly tradition, which began with a life-changing diagnosis, does much more than entertain us. It reminds my friends and I that life does not hinge on grades or tests or soccer games. Life is about friendship and support and courage. Life is not about surviving, but about living.

How does Alan Bennett make effective use of the dramatic monologue to hold the interest of the audience Essay Example

How does Alan Bennett make effective use of the dramatic monologue to hold the interest of the audience Essay Example How does Alan Bennett make effective use of the dramatic monologue to hold the interest of the audience Essay How does Alan Bennett make effective use of the dramatic monologue to hold the interest of the audience Essay A Cream Cracker under the Settee is a dramatic monologue. A dramatic monologue is a drama piece performed by only one person. By examining the characterisation, humour, timescale and pauses of this monologue this essay will look at the ways Alan Bennett holds the interest of the audience. Characterisation is shown through voices and memory. Doris is the central character in the monologue. She is a 75-year-old down to earth, Yorkshire widow. She is a conscientious lady who, throughout her life has taken a pride in keeping her home spotlessly clean and tidy. She disapproves of Zulema, her home help sent in by the council, doing household chores that she has always managed to do. Doris has high standards where cleanliness is concerned and she is upset that Zulemas work does not meet these standards. In Doriss opinion, Zulema only half dusts and Doris is upset to find things that she would never miss being missed. For example Doris finds dust on top of her wedding photo that has been missed by Zulema. Doris never did like untidyness even when she was younger. This is shown through her recollection of conversations with her late husband, Wilfred. The reason for Doris not wanting a garden was because she thought the trees, plants etc would create mess by dropping their leaves. Wilfred wanting a garden complete with bush caused great debate. Is it a bush that will make a mess Doris asks. From hygiene point of view Doris would be happier with concrete. Although Wilfred argued that concrete lacked character Doris pointed out that it could be kept clean and tidy making Doris feel easy in her mind. Another way Bennett shows Doriss dislike for untidiness was when Wilfred expressed a desire to have a dog. Doris was against having a dog because of the mess it would make with all the dog hairs that would need cleaning up. During their marriage Doris unfortunately had a miss carriage. The midwife came and wrapped the baby in newspaper and Doris never saw him. Wilfred, she thought, just took it in his stride and it was after this he started talking about getting a dog. Doris wished shed had children particularly a daughter because a daughter would have looked after her and she wouldnt be where she was now. If she had had children she might not be as miserable or lonely. There is a strong battle of wills between Doris and Zulema. Doris wants to keep her independence and continue her own cleaning whilst Zulema wants her to forget cleaning and be a lady of leisure. Zulema takes harsh actions and bans Doris from dusting and using the Ewbank. However, Doris is stubborn and houseproud and pays no attention to Zulema. She climbs on to a buffet to examine the cleanliness of her wedding photo and subsequently falls hurting her leg. This makes Doris feel that Zulema is one up because she warned her that this would happen. While Doris is sat on the floor she notices a cream cracker under the settee. This makes Doris mad because she cant remember the last time that shed had cream crackers and obviously Zulema hadnt cleaned thoroughly under the settee. Doris keeps the cream cracker to show to Zulema the next time she lectures her about Stafford house. To get her own back on Zulema, Doris threatens to send it to, The director of social services and put Zulema in the unemployment exchange. Another character referred to in the monologue is Wilfred. Wilfred is Doriss late husband. When Doris reminisces about Wilfred she often add a small joke to help keep the audience interested in Doriss situation. Wilfred and Doris were different in character. Doris was the busy one keeping the home clean and tidy and Wilfred was very laid back with lots of little job to do that were never accomplished. Wilfred always told Doris not to worry when things needed doing, Hed put it on his list. However Doris never saw this list and consequently jobs never got done. A good example of this was the loose sneck on the gate and the allotment, which would allow them to become self sufficient in the vegetable department. Neither materialised. Wilfred and Doris didnt have any children so Doris was lonely after Wilfreds death. The way in which the language portrays Doriss age is when she refers to Wilfred. Doris calls Wilfred Dad, Wilfred calls Doris Mum, these terms are often used by the older generation as terms of endearment. Doriss attitudes towards folk in the neighbourhood also make it clear that she is from an older generation. Her attitude towards the younger generation is that they are disrespectful. For example she says, would you credit it when the boy uses her garden as a toilet. This means that she couldnt believe what she had seen. When Doris was younger marriage was considered to be a commitment were people stayed together for better or worse and every body in the neighbour hood knew each other. Doris looking out of her window noticed that she doesnt know any of her neighbours, not even the people opposite and half the couples together arent married. Doris comments, you see all sorts, then you loose track. The younger generation would not make these comments and would just accept the different types of people and relationships. Doris has a very down to earth sense of humour. This is portrayed through Doriss understanding of the irony of life. For example Doris says after Wilfreds death, Hes got his little garden now. This is ironic because when Wilfred was alive he never accomplished his goal of having the garden he wanted. Doris also shows humour through one-liners. After the glass on her wedding photo cracked she says, weve cracked Wilfred. This not only means that the glass has cracked around the picture, she implying that she might have cracked as well. Her Yorkshire dialect and her use of colloquialisms often portray Doriss humour. A good example of this is when the boy upsets Doris by using her garden as a toilet she says, Hes spending a penny her use of term makes the action humorous. Pauses are used through out the monologue. These are used for effect and to allow the audience time to make sense of Doriss situation. Longer pauses are used to make an impact on the audience and also allow the audience to reflect on Doriss situation and understand the impact this has on their own thoughts and feelings. In conclusion Alan Bennett uses four effective ways to keep the audiences interest. The characterisation of the monologue is effective. The characters recalled through Doriss memory are kept brief and this brings interest because the audience wants to know more. Doris has a good understanding of the irony of life, in her situation this is comical and interesting bringing in humour. The Yorkshire derelict and use of colloquialisms also adds amusement. By mixing the past and the present the interest of the audience is held and the pauses are used to good effect to build drama and give the audience time to take in what has been said.

Brain Computer Interfaces - Term Paper Example entists have always speculated that EEG might prove helpful for a completely different kind of purpose, which is infact another way of sending messages to the brain, and instructions to the outside world. Until this discovery, the control and communication system solely depended on the muscles and nerves. But with EEG, communication with out the use of muscles and nerves is achieved with the help of brain computer interface. â€Å"Brain computer Interfaces a new communication and control option for individuals for whom convenient options are ineffective.†Ã‚   It provides a way of communication and control for those people who are disabled, for whom the normal way of communication is literally impossible. The goal of the BCI system is to listening to the brain, understand its intent, and then to materialize that intent without the involvement of muscles. This is the reason why BCI s is also termed as â€Å"mind reading technology† (Wolpaw, R & Birbaumer, Niels p.603). The BCI system reads the â€Å"Electrophysiological signals reflecting brain activity, and they are acquired from the scalp, cortical surface or from within the brain† (Wolpaw, R & Birbaumer, Niels) . They are transferred to measure certain signals which help in knowing the intent of the user. These signals are converted into commands. These commands, in turn, fulfil the user intent like operating a machine, speaking something, walking in a particular direction etc. The interfaces which are Invasive are directly implanted in the brain. These are normally used in blind or paralyzed patients. The interfaces which are semi invasive are implanted inside the brain but not within the brain of an individual. Non invasive interfaces â€Å"record the brain signals through a neuro-imaging procedure† (Brain Computer Interfaces). Brain Computer Interfaces still have a long way to go. Researches are being conducted to understand brain functioning and to map it efficiently to an electronic device. There is no doubt

A Visit to the Animal Kingdom in Florida Essay Example for Free

A Visit to the Animal Kingdom in Florida Essay English Reflective Essay Florida is portrayed as a fantasy land where Mickey Mouse greets you around every corner and where Cinderella actually lives, where days go by without a single drop of rain and the sky is consistently perfectly blue. However this was the farthest thing from my mind as I sat in an immense carbon-emmiting monster whose air conditioning has spluttered and died and while the heavens poured the air was so thick and mucky that flies were sticking to the windshield as we drove, only to be washed away by the drowning rain. As this was happening, my dad who was yet to figure out his left from his right had the near-miracle task of finding our hotel. Which was almost impossible because visibility was limited to about a yard and that requires great concentration, which was hard to find after the fiasco at the airport. Day 2 To my great excitement, Animal Kingdom was our first theme park, rather disappointing though what was hyped up to be a splendour of animal based excitement turned out to be a zoo with the odd thrill. However my memory of the first day was largely marred by Dad; with his new and shiny American muscle car; forgot that when all four doors were shut the lock system was activated. All hell broke lose! With my mum muttering and rambling nonchalantly and quietly with the odd distinguishable, God.. men and my dad, the man of the household and the decisive being, who was spouting all sorts of obscenities and was spanking the car, lightly so no damage was done but gave the impression that somehow it was the cars fault, it was up to me (seeming the only level headed member of the family) to aqcuire the basic survival needs such as food and water. With out park tickets being used for the day there was no way of buying fresh water. Giving up on the task of survival and surrending to the fate of the great over-powering Florida sunshine that was gobbling up every ounce of liquid, I went to a little ledge at the very far side of the car park and with ironic timing the edge of my eye caught sight of a little pool. And just like an oasis in the middle of the Sahara desert the temptation to drink from this minor miracle was extreme. As I squatted and stared while heavily drooling with my mouth arid there was a conflict of conscience apparent in my head. The good side was reciting the well known fact that one of the locals had stated, In every pool of water in Florida there is an alligator. The other evil side accompanied by my sailva and most major organs, was willing to tempt fate yet my good conscience claimed noble victory and I was left to dessicate. And looking back on it, it was probably a wise decision, however the journey back to the apartment was like a front row seat between Mohammed Ali and Mike Tyson.

Def Jam is the home of many of raps greatest names like LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Jay-Z etc. these are the names and this the label that brought rap music to the mainstream without changing or sugar-coating anything just to get to the top.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Lyor Cohen co-president of Island Def Jam music who oversees black music at Universal Records. In a January 2001 interview in â€Å"The Source† magazine Cohen says â€Å"we tend to our own gardens here, we don’t look into our neighbors garden. We are happy to see them do whatever they want to do, drive whatever they want to drive. No matter how much they â€Å"bling-bling† we don’t care about that†. This is what makes Def Jam so successful, they don’t â€Å"lean† with the trends that other labels and artists set, they make their own trends and do a great job at it. Cohen, ex-manager of Run-DMC, and longtime partner of Russell Simmons has been with Def Jam since almost Day one. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Seen in Advertisements

Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a important aspect to understanding a company to implement the proper marketing methods. Seeing the consumers needs will allow the organization to appeal to that need. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs starts with the most basic physiological needs, followed by safety, social, self esteem, and topped with self-actualization needs in ascending order (Tanner, 2011). The physiological and safety needs tend to be more tangible or sustainable. While the center levels may have more of an emotional or rational payoff. Then the peak or self actualization is more transformational or even spiritual mindset (Conley, 2007). Looking at each advertisement you can tell the marketer is appealing to society’s needs as humans. This is because society is stimulated for disappointment if their expectations or needs are not met (Conley, 2007). Looking at the Pepsi commercial, they are addressing the social needs of humans (Blink967, 2007). The young boy enters the monastery looking for acceptance, he goes through years of training eventually mastering monasticism. Then the entire monastery pulls out Pepsi’s and drinks the whole can. Once the young boy sees the foreheads of all other monks, he smashes the can with his forehead becoming a true member of the monastery. Pepsi petitions the humanistic needs in everyone to be feel accepted, loved, and befriended by others with this commercial (Tanner, 2011). Volkswagen implores a need for safety. In their commercial they go even further in protecting one’s offspring in a humorous way. It features a young family who is taking their newborn baby from the hospital to his home for the first time. As he is put comfortably in a Volkswagen, his dad almost crashes the car. A short glimpse of life flashes before the baby’s eyes which is the funny part. Volkswagen marketers are appealing to a parents need to protect their children. Since most parents will sacrifice anything to ensure their child's physical well being. This is towards the bottom and more attainable goal on Maslow’s pyramid, thus attaining to a larger population (Tanner, 2011). The final advertisement are from McDonald’s. They advertise the same product to satisfy the same need but in different cultures. The need is to satisfy hunger; which is the most basics of needs from Maslow (Tanner, 2011). The advertisement shown in Arabic countries has very little dialogue compared to the one from the United States. Arab one makes use of the song, while using actions and expressions of the characters to advertise McDonald’s. The advertisers do not say explicitly how good McDonald’s is but instead, make clever use of lyrics from a song with a clever fight between loved ones to a it in a subtle way. On the other hand, the United States version is full of dialogue by this nerdy-looking guy. He tells how â€Å"sophisticated† and â€Å"worldly† he becomes after finding McDonald’s international mug and coffee offer. He then states all the meals on the great value meal. Everything is stated out clearly for the audience that McDonald’s meals are cheap and you can even get â€Å"good stuff† like the â€Å"international mug and coffee† at low price. Comparing the two advertisements, marketers should definitely pick the one advertised in Arabic nations because it conveys its message in a subtle way. This entices the audience before the ending punch line with the fight. The advertisement from the United States is definitely too boring with all the dialogue. Of course, presenting advertisements in a more creative and subtle way will capture the audience’s attention. However, it must be done correctly.

The Internet Essay - 597 Words

nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Webster’s dictionary defines the Internet as â€Å"a widely used networking interface, connecting several very large information servers† (193). The Internet is a good way for companies or anyone to get information out to the entire world. Electronic marketing (e-marketing) is a very large part of the Internet. E-marketing is â€Å"the process of creating, distributing, promoting, and pricing products for targeted customers in the virtual environment of the Internet† (Ferrell 597). There are many advantages and disadvantages to e-marketing. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; One disadvantage to e-marketing is the advancements in cookie technology. A cookie is a way for companies to track how many times people visit their†¦show more content†¦Often times there are many ads circulating at the same place. When I surf the Internet usually I am doing it for one reason, to gather information. The last thing I am going to want is some company sticking their add right in my face. I believe if consumers want to buy these products, they would visit websites of companies who sold them. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;A third disadvantage to e-marketing is intrusive e-mail. E-mail is a good way to communicate long distances for free. Like postal mail, people can receive junk mail electronically. This has always burned me. This takes up valuable space on the hard drive and also valuable time of the recipient. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; As long as there are disadvantages there must always be at least one advantage to whatever is under review. If there weren’t it wouldn’t exists. One advantage to e-marketing is the availability of products to consumers. The Internet is running twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. To the consumer the Internet is a great place to shop around. There are many places to get the same products; and being able to shop from the comfort of your own home is a nice convenience.
